Also, please help curb the animal complaint calls we are receiving regarding loose cattle and dogs running at large. We try to work with dog and cattle owners to educate them and allow time to mend fences and such. Warnings are generally given upon notice of violations of these ordinances and/or state statutes. However, we cannot allow habitual violations of these laws to continue and have and will continue to issue citations for these repeated violations. We can appreciate the rural nature of our community but also understand the need to keep public safety first in mind when addressing these issues.
The "Open Range" law may apply to ranchers in Montana, but does not apply in Duluth Township. Yes, certain people have the belief that moving to the "country" allows you to let your dogs run at large in the vast open spaces the country offers. This is false. Feel free to let your dogs run at large upon the acreage you own. This is certainly permissible. But keep in mind, when your dog runs uncontrolled on your neighbors land or on a public roadway, you are subject to prosecution both criminally and civilly for any damage or harm caused by these animals.
With the increased number of calls regarding loose dogs, I am seriously considering approaching the Town Board in regard to the licensure of dogs in this Township. If for no other reason than to be able to locate the owners of such when we find them running loose off the owners property. Believe me, I am the last person who wants to see another "Fee" placed upon us for simply enjoying what life offers. So please help us avoid this by speaking with your neighbors and helping out in the event you see their animals loose.
If anyone has any comments, questions or solutions regarding this concern, please feel free to contact me at 218-525-5705 or 393-8407.
Thank you,
Shawn
