Thank you for your interest in teaching a class for Duluth Township Community Education. Duluth Township Community Education classes are open to the general public. The following information outlines the procedures and responsibilities for instructors.
Mission Statement
The mission of Duluth Township Community Education Program is to offer educational opportunities through the use of school and community resources, to individuals who want to explore new areas of learning, seek enrichment from personal and professional growth, and for those who enjoy the company of others who want to learn.
Creating a Class Proposal
Instructors are encouraged to draft a class proposal ( Instructor Proposal Form ) that includes the course description and details. Please note that submitting a class proposal does not guarantee your class will be listed in the Fall or Spring session course listings. All proposals are evaluated by the Duluth Township Community Education Coordinators for content, value and appeal to our community members. You will be contacted by the Community Education office regarding the approval of your proposal. Following approval, the instructor must complete a Community Education Service Provider Agreement Form found on the DTCE Instructor's Corner webpage. A copy of this form will be submitted to the Township Clerk by one of the DTCE coordinators upon course completion and will serve as the instructor's invoice for payment.
Class Registration, Fees and Instructor Payment
The fee charged for a Community Education class is determined by agreement between the instructor and the Community Education Coordinators. The instructor is generally allowed to set his/her own amount, however, the Community Education Coordinator may suggest that the fee be set approximately equal to similar classes offered. Community Education Coordinators will be responsible for collect class fees which are to be submitted with all class registrations.
The payment Community Education Instructors receive is determined by first removing a 15% registration/administration fee. The instructor receives 85% of the remaining total class fees received. Because instructor’s salaries are determined by a percentage of the fees taken in, instructors may set a minimum number of students for which they will teach the class, thus, controlling the minimum salary for teaching the course. Checks will be mailed to the instructor upon completion of a single offering class or the last class conducted if multiple classes are offered.
Supply Fees
Any supply fees charged by the instructor must reflect their actual cost and are not intended to be a moneymaker for the instructor. Supply fee information must be included in the class description. The instructor must collect and account for any supply fees.
Facilities
Community Education classes can be conducted within the following facilities:
North Shore Community School, 5926 Ryan Road – Gym, Cafeteria, Library, Science Room
Duluth Township Town Hall, 6092 Homestead Road – General meeting area, Kitchen
In order to conduct a class in one of these facilities the instructor must complete a Community Education Service Provider Facility Use Agreement Form. This form can be found on the Community Education website.
Equipment
Requests for equipment necessary for conducting a class must be made at least one week in advance of conducting a class. The following equipment is available for use: LCD projector, screen, overhead projector.
Course Content
Instructors are responsible for providing all necessary instructional aides. Community Education does not purchase instructional supplies for recurring use. As an instructor, you are responsible for
developing course content and how the course is to be taught. Community Education reserves the right to “counsel” with instructors to enhance program instruction. Community Education follows all copyright practices and procedures. Permission must be obtained from the publisher and copyright holders before reproducing copyrighted consumable materials.
You are encouraged to have your students fill out a Class feedback form at the conclusion of your course. This will help both the Instructor and DTCE plan future classes. You will receive the forms for students to complete upon conclusion of your class. Forms are also available for download on the Instructor's Corner . Completed forms must be returned to the Community Education Office.
Cancellations and Refunds
Students must register prior to the first class session. If the minimum enrollment for a class is not met, the class may be cancelled upon discretion of the instructor.
If school is cancelled at North Shore Community School, all Community Education classes scheduled that day will be cancelled. Should bad weather begin in the afternoon, an answering machine announcement will be placed on the Community Education voice mailbox and can be accessed by calling 218-525-0663 Ext. 300. In most instances, when class sessions are canceled due to severe weather, every attempt will be made to reschedule a class. Sometimes this cannot happen, due to facility unavailability or scheduling conflicts.
A full refund will be issued for the following reasons:
- Cancellation of a one-time class (that cannot be rescheduled) due to severe weather
- Class cancellation due to low enrollment
- Class cancellation due to instructor illness
- Cancellation of a one-time class that cannot be rescheduled
Class Lists
Class lists will be mailed or emailed to the instructor prior to the start of the first session. Class lists are regarded as confidential information and should not be used or shared for any purpose other than course attendance.
Unregistered Students
If your class has the maximum number of students and additional students arrive before class begins, you have the option of letting them stay or asking them to leave. If you choose to accept them, please obtain their names, addresses, phone numbers and collect the class fee. No one should be allowed to stay without paying. Checks should be payable to “Duluth Township Community Education”. Please turn in all information and checks to the Community Education office.
Instructor Absence and Schedule Change
In the event an instructor finds it imperative to be absent from a class during the day preceding the class, the Community Education office must be notified as soon as possible so student’s can be contacted. Call Michelle Libby at 525-5032 or Jo Thompson at 525-5854. If a substitute is available, such arrangements should be made cooperatively with the Community Education office. If the class must be canceled and it is after 3:00 PM, the instructor is responsible for notifying the students. The Community Education office will supply the contact information needed to do this. Instructors must re-schedule a make-up date. PLEASE NOTE: No class date should ever be changed unless it is first communicated with the Community Education staff.
Facilities Usage
At the end of a regular school day many classrooms are used continuously into the evening hours by various groups and organizations. Custodial staff may clean rooms prior to the start of your evening/weekend classes. Please be a good steward of the space you share. When you arrive to set up your class, please make careful note of the condition of the room. If you use a whiteboard, make sure you are using the proper marker. As you leave the classroom, please see that windows are closed and locked, furniture is as you found it, and the lights off. Any difficulties in returning a classroom to its original condition are to be reported to Community Education immediately. In simple terms, please leave the room and any equipment just as you found it.
Business Solicitation
Class lists are not to be used for business solicitation of any kind. Students are class participants. They are not to be pressured during the course or after to buy anything or join any group. Promoting services, attempting to attract new clients for a business, and other sales techniques are not to be done during any Duluth Township Community Education class. Failure to comply with this premise will result in the class being dropped from Community Education sponsorship.
Smoking
Please note that all Duluth township buildings and grounds are to be smoke free. Therefore, smoking is not permitted in the buildings or on the grounds (i.e. parking lot, outside entrances, etc.) No exceptions!!!
Accidents/Injuries
If a student in your class has an accident or an injury, an account of the incident must be documented. As soon as possible, contact Michelle Libby at 525-5032 or Jo Thompson at 525-5854.
